KETIKS.COM – On July 9, 1962 in Hawaii at midnight, the pitch black sky suddenly lit up brightly, like a second sun suddenly appearing. The color of the sky turned green, then red, and slowly returned to darkness, all of that in a matter of seconds. It didn’t happen naturally. But it happened because of a nuclear experiment called Starfish Prime. (Shinehire)

In the arms race during the Cold War, one of the weapons that was developed intensively was nuclear. The weapon that leveled Hiroshima and Nagasaki was developed to be much more lethal with a much higher explosive power. It even made the nuclear that leveled the two Japanese cities look like firecrackers.

Starfish Prime is one of the nuclear tests in a research conducted by the United States. The main purpose of this test is to find out what will happen when a nuclear warhead is detonated in space. In anticipation if the Soviets did, the United States at least was prepared and knew what would happen.

This test began when the Thor rocket carrying 1.4 megaton nuclear warhead was launched from Johnston Atoll. The nuke was detonated at an altitude of 400 kilometers. And the explosion produced an EMP, much larger than expected. It caused some areas of Hawaii and even New Zealand to experience power and electrical failures.

In addition to the damage done, the explosion from Starfish Prime also makes something beautiful. A gigantic Aurora stretched for thousands of kilometers, briefly illuminating the sky. Even so, the results of the test can be felt until now. Where many satellites are still affected by the EMP resulting from the explosion.
